Hello, I am John Miller
Artist, Graphic Designer, and Creative Practitioner
John Miller is a multidisciplinary artist and designer whose work explores creativity as a process of experimentation, storytelling, and problem-solving. Working across papercut art, digital design, and mixed media, he focuses on making complex ideas tangible and helping others see creativity as something accessible and achievable.
“Creativity is making solutions to impossible problems.”
Creative Practice
John Miller is an artist and designer whose work centers on experimentation, storytelling, and the exploration of materials. He works across a wide range of mediums, including papercut art, digital design, painting, and mixed media, often combining techniques to create layered and visually engaging pieces.
He is particularly drawn to working with paper, using precise cuts and layered construction to define line, color, and depth. His work often reflects a strong awareness of pattern, structure, and composition, with an emphasis on how individual elements interact to form a cohesive whole.
Rather than limiting himself to a single discipline, John approaches creativity as a flexible system—one that allows him to move between materials, tools, and ideas while continuing to refine his skills.
Early Creative Development
John has been creative for as long as he can remember, exploring a wide range of materials and techniques from an early age. As a child, he experimented with wire working, wood carving, metalworking, and drawing, developing a hands-on understanding of how materials function and interact.
His creativity was shaped by both access to tools and a natural curiosity about how things are made. At the age of 15, he was hired to use a high-powered laser cutting machine, giving him early experience with precision tools and digital fabrication.
While creativity was always present in his life, it was not until 2022 that he began to seriously consider art as a career rather than solely a form of emotional expression.
Skills, Tools, and Process
John is largely self-taught, developing his skills through observation, experimentation, and independent study. He regularly learns through books, videos, and hands-on practice, allowing him to adapt quickly to new tools and techniques.
His technical experience spans a wide range of tools and programs, including digital design software such as Inkscape, CorelDRAW, Photoshop, and Blender, as well as physical tools like laser cutters, 3D printers, woodworking equipment, and various crafting and construction tools.
This broad skill set allows him to move fluidly between digital and physical creation, often combining both in his work. His process is rooted in experimentation—testing ideas, refining them, and learning through iteration.
Projects and Collaborative Work
John has worked on a wide range of creative projects, with a current focus on papercut artwork and mixed media design.
His recent work includes a twelve-piece papercut stamp series depicting American animals and cryptids, as well as a series of paintings inspired by sketches created during his time in mental health facilities. These works explore storytelling through visual form, translating personal experiences into tangible pieces.
He frequently collaborates with Michelle on projects, combining their strengths in material creation and design. Notable collaborations include layered paper artwork made from handmade recycled paper and custom-built display pieces for events.
John is currently developing additional papercut collections, mental health-focused paintings, and experimental edge-lit acrylic artwork.
Community & Teaching
John enjoys sharing his creative process and helping others build confidence in their own abilities. He has a strong interest in teaching both artistic skills and the mindset needed to grow creatively.
He focuses on helping others understand that creativity does not need to be perfect or intimidating. One of the key ideas he emphasizes is the importance of starting the process—making something first and refining it later.
He is particularly interested in teaching art, business, and self-improvement, with the goal of helping others move beyond creativity as a hobby and into something more sustainable and meaningful.
Current Work & Future Direction
John is currently focused on developing new papercut designs, particularly in a postage stamp format inspired by historical print styles. He is also working on expanding his skills in digital design and fabrication, including edge-lit acrylic artwork using layered color techniques.
Looking forward, he hopes to explore additional materials such as metal, leather, wood, and clothing design, expanding both his technical abilities and creative range.
As part of On Our Trail, John is especially interested in developing workshops and educational content that help others build creative skills and confidence. He aims to create opportunities for people to learn, experiment, and grow through hands-on creative work.
Artistic Philosophy
For John, creativity is both a process and a tool—something that allows ideas, emotions, and experiences to be expressed in ways that words cannot.
He believes that creativity helps people solve problems, communicate more effectively, and better understand both themselves and the world around them. His work reflects a desire to make creativity more accessible, helping others see that art is not something reserved for a few, but something anyone can engage with.
Through his work, he hopes people not only enjoy what they see, but feel encouraged to create, experiment, and push their own ideas further.
While my work focuses on design, experimentation, and creative problem-solving, there is also a personal story that has shaped how and why I create.
